[issue495] my workspace has gone nuts

After a couple of rather silly operations, I managed to get 
my mq-controlled workspace into a crazy situation. I'm
attaching a transcript of what happened (the vi's were not
editing anything) from a known-good point, to the end of the
madness, as well as a tarball of the workspace.
