That was Matt's answer, too.  But that produces bizarre results for a 
repo that contains only one live branch, if the name of that branch 
isn't "default"; you get updated to the head of an old, probably 
inactive branch.

The current behaviour interacts very badly with the Subversion importer. 
  The last change on the default branch that it constructs from an svn 
repo I'm using is 15 months old.  Having to manually say "no, I mean 
update to *this* branch" every time I clone it is very annoying.
