I don't either, I see the ASCII graphic separately from what I
put in at the command line.
OTOH, to my own astonishment, the dot variant works quite well
for me -- spontaneous connotation: I am at this point (in "time")
now -- whereas I realize that I have to do a "conscious
translation" of the "at".
I can live with either version, but I don't agree with the
rationale why it was changed.
Mind you, this is almost a matter of taste, or at least
subjective connotations, and additionaly might vary with the
fonts used (DejaVu Sans Mono here).
It could be made configurable ... but I like the straightforward
simplicity of the extension.
