The discrepancy of behaviors that I mentioned is a client-side issue
(the same server was being cloned from in all three cases, FWIW it is
httpd-2.2.3-7.el5.centos on x86_64 running a slightly hacked
hgwebdir.cgi) so I'm not sure how the version of Apache enters the
picture.

I'd venture that it would boil down to which versions of Python and
the assorted Web client standard library are going to enjoy support,
if only someone had the time to do some actual detective work as
opposed to my monkey-testing approach... Meanwhile, I feel that a
single hashtable store worth of lost performance with an appropriate
FIXME comment in the source is good enough to put this issue at rest.

But at the end of the day I'll be happy just bowing sycophantically
before your unparalleled Shapironess as usual :)
