No, even in a large terminal (COLUMNS=174), but consistently inside 
Emacs (run as an X app, not itself inside a terminal) where COLUMNS=228. 
The actual (as opposed to expected) bars do indeed stretch to the right 
margin of the Emacs shell buffer, i.e. the command is behaving as I 
would expect it to, contrary to what the test is expecting.

Note that the 'churn with column specifier' section passes. I will send 
a patch to make it pass for me even inside Emacs.
