Is there anything left I can do for patch 1 and 2,
so that at least these two patches could be included
or should this work be dropped together with patch 3?

I'm asking because patch 1 and 2 were sure motivated
by now rejected patch 3, but it seems to me that 1 + 2
are an independent improvement over the current code,
even without patch 3.

So, is there anything left to do for patch 1 and 2?

Or should patch 1 and 2 be thrown away as well?
