friend of mine did send me this repo/workdir

the change to helper.cpp goes unnoticed

debugrebuilddirstate fixes

according to him nothing weird did happen before 
(he only uses pull/push/merge/ci/up/st)

please tell me what exactly is wrong and possible reasons for the borkage
