Currently, there are a bunch of projects doing something like this:
- record
- crecord
- tortoisehg
- qrecord
- maybe others

I don't know if it's feasible across all of these, but I think your
proposal should try to cut down the code that they currently
duplicate. This would entail thinking about an API that allows element
(dir/patch/hunk/...) selection from a graphical GUI too, where people
will want to jump back and forth refining their selection.

This might overlap a bit with Ronny Pfannschmidt's proposal.
