So the roadmap for getting the default changed starts with improving GNU 
patch to support the git format and then wait some years for that 
version to be used everywhere. Other tools might have to be fixed too. 
Next step is to get a Mercurial default changed. because of the focus on 
backward compatibility that might be the hardest part.
