[PATCH 0 of 2] More non-GNU fixes

Patch 1 is one approach to the non-GNU diff problem. It adds a 'shelltools'
file which detects a preferred diff program and defines a function to use
it. 'shelltolls' is sourced by the two tests which use 'diff -u'.

Patch 2 fixes two tests which use $PWD. $PWD is not tracked by a Bourne
shell, so $PWD/engine.py (for example) expands as '/engine.py' in all
cases on systems that use a traditional /bin/sh. This must apply after
Brodie Rao's environment patch, which affects the same line in one test.
(It's 95046688f80 in crew.)

Apologies for any dups -- my outgoing SMTP is failing sporadically and
it interrupts patchbomb, blocking completion.
