keyword: versioning my homedir and ~/.hgrc

Excluding .hg fails:

abort: path contains illegal component: .hg

That's the config parser's policy, I guess.

I actually wanted to propose a patch that just exludes .hgtags
and .hg to hear what others think, but it doesn't seem that easy.
