[PATCH 0 of 4] v2: various improvements to English (mostly help)

This is v2 of the patch series sent by timeless at gmail.com on the
weekend.  (We've been refining the patches off-list, and he asked me
to shepherd it the rest of the way since he's travelling this week.)

I've reordered the patch series so the low-impact, low-controversy
ones come first.  In fact, the series I'm sending now is all pretty
low controversy.  The big patch, which updates mercurial/commands.py,
currently breaks the tests, so I'm holding it back for a little.  In
the meantime, these four are small, self-contained, do not break the
tests, and are IMHO ready to push.
