I have a local alias for this. Now that I see this I think it was
motivated by the same rationale. The history of my ~/.hgrc file shows
that it was added at the same time I enabled the extension:

  $ hg log -vr 346
  changeset:   346:dbb97ac04d94
  user: Giorgos Keramidas <keramida at ceid.upatras.gr>
  date:        Mon Jan 12 16:25:55 2009 +0200
  files:       .hgrc
  description:
  hg: enable the bookmark extension and 'hg mark' as an alias

Typing `bookmarks' was a bit too much, so I shortened it to `mark'. The
later is also a verb and felt more ``natural''.

Thanks indeed :)
