Doesn't Gnus already sort these correctly using References: or the
In-Reply-to: headers?

It does here, but I have tweaked the gnus-gather-threads-by-xxx code to
allow per-group customizations so I don't know if the default setup does
this automatically.

Any other mailers having problem with batch emails?
