I tried force application/binary for patches that are not
either ascii or utf-8 when I implemented email.charsets, but
somehow didn't find a way to do this via the email module. Should
I look into this again? Anyone with a pointer to nudge me in the
right direction?

Mutt handles it fine as well when you just copy the message to an
mbox.
