Most of my hg repos exist in ~/devel/<...>

If you're actually planning to use hard links, then using ~ will move
all my data to the wrong volume as distinct copies.

Note that often ~ is on a metered file system. My other user's home is
actually encrypted and used to live on that 8gb root file system which
as you can imagine is kind of cramped.
