Symlinks on AFP are known to be busted:

http://markmail.org/message/3hcqaehm4fhqkln6
http://www.selenic.com/pipermail/mercurial/2008-March/017632.html

In particular, it means that OS X fails to honor valid requests to
remove them shortly after creation. Which means locking on AFP has
problems.

Someone with some Macs should look into fixing it.
