I've not spent any time looking into this - and I don't have time to
work on this today. Your hack seems reasonable, but I don't know
*anything* about urllib2 internals - I've spent my time working on
writing a replacement for httplib. If someone has a good option for
monkeypatching a fix into urllib2, that's great - somewhere in the
timeline for 1.7 I'm hoping to have a viable replacement for our use
of urllib2/httplib working.
