So, to sum things up (in my view).

Disadvantages/complexity:
    - code: + ~ 1 line
    - config/documentation : not much if a default is
      chosen (plus a footnote for the other solution). Only
      explain the default solution to users.
    - runtime: 1 stat on each invocation only if you differ
      from the default config

Advantages/user-friendliness:
    - doesn't break existing behavior
    - clean an unixish user directories
    - easier integration with automatic config/backup tools
