Here are some meta-comments:

In the post-named-branches era of Mercurial, tip isn't a particularly
useful concept. We should be working towards removing 'tip' from our
vocabulary.

Also, I think we need to slow down a bit with adding -S to things. We
don't really have a solid picture of what the final form of subrepo
support looks like and we don't want to add features that we later
withdraw. Right now, the goal is to eventually make -S the default for
status and diff and the like, but we definitely don't want to do that
with a bunch of other commands (like tip). So adding -S here is probably
a step in the wrong direction.
