[PATCH 0 of 5 RFC v2] tests: numerous improvements to unified tests

I've ordered this series by least controversial change first.

The first three patches are general improvements that don't make any
major changes to the unified test format.

The fourth patch implements " (re)". It does literal matching before
regex matching.

The fifth patch implements " (glob)". I've gone through and updated
tests that can take advantage of the simpler syntax. The syntax
consists of *, ?, \*, \?, and \\.
