Let's revive this discussion a bit (see also on IRC).
I still dislike the idea, for several reasons:
1. We already have ssh://, this is just added clutter
2. I thoroughly prefer the explicit protocol, it makes it clear what will happen
3. I think host:path-style paths are confusing, because I'm used to :
introducing a port
Apparently all this is because I'm a UNIX weenie who got into ssh, scp
and rsync AFTER http:// became the common reference (as such I've
never used scp and use rsync:// URLs). I don't think one side of this
debate will get to agreement with the other side, so I think Matt
should just pronounce on this whatever he feels is right.
