May be you might still want to reserve the "remote/" usage in the core (and 
other similar git syntax) for future use, either by an error or a warning.
This does not break any backward compatibility as the bookmark extension was a 
work in progress for which BC does not apply.

By reserving this usage, you would not have to break the BC of bookmark in the 
core later if you decide to implement it, this would made it clear to users 
that there is nothing implemented in this area yet.
The downside is that a 'bookmarks-remote' extension should shut that off.
