At first, I was appending "(amended by gilles on 2011-01-23)" to the (first) 
line. But as everything must fit in one line without --verbose, this was too 
long. So your suggestion of prepending "(*)" is a very good idea.

Note that for --verbose and --debug, I have already inserted many details 
about who change the message and when.
