I see this toggle is only on the branches page, which might be too
narrow a scope. I think we should think a little bit more expansively
about 'filtering the hgweb view' before moving in this direction.

Also, a while ago I dropped in a new templating engine (though I don't
think anyone noticed!). It can easily be extended to support
conditionals, etc., so your show/hide template hacks can be simplified.
