As with underbars, the state of the codebase is not definitive on
policy. But we do in fact lean strongly the other way:

$ hgrep "debug[(]" | grep "_[(]" | wc
      6      38     480
$ hgrep "debug[(]" | grep -v "_[(]" | wc
    211    1376   17013

(I see you've sent a patch to remove those 6!)

Ironically, it was Martin who first brought up this issue:

..and his opinion that we shouldn't translate them has been the rule
since that time. He remembered it as recently as March 14:

I think it's the right rule to have. But I guess it never got written
down anywhere: it's neither on the wiki nor in check-code. Guess I'll
fix that.
