I don't think having to download a bunch of unnecessary stuff is an
improvement. Also, Debian is a pretty standard target these days. I'm
obviously not suggesting building exclusively for Debian.
Perhaps consider using some other tool like dblatex. Personally I'd rather
deal with a TeX based toolchain than this Java/FOP stuff.

True. The hgbook built by FOP etc looks Ok. The one built by dblatex also
looks Ok. There are some minor differences.
