I haven't looked at the patches in detail, but do you get the behavior
you want if there is no default branch?

I just tested a little and I guess not: 'hg clone' will update to the
tip-most revision, even if there is a bookmark called 'default'
somewhere else. But a tag named 'default' works: you're updated to the
changeset tagged 'default', even when it's not the tip-most revision.
