I've had a little shell+awk script here that was doing exactly that, but
I was missing a lot of features, so I thought it was time for it to be
included in Mercurial itself, one way or another...

Granted. +/- is not what we want for good/bad, then.

I disagree to using non-ASCII chars by default. Some fonts might be missing
the corresponding glyphs. Also, a lot of terminals are not UTF-8 aware. And
on mine, they just seem to similar in the font I am using (Monospace/9p).

Let's stick to using the initials for now. And then later add a configuration
entry in ~/.hgrc so the user can override it if needed/wanted.
