I tried digging into the code but haven't come up with anything useful
yet.

Like I said on IRC, bisect points to a refactoring in
cmdutil.duplicatecopies
but it's very much possible that it's a timing issue that isn't triggered in
the old version, perhaps because it takes slightly longer.

Any ideas?
