Distributed downloading

Hi,

I'm new to the list and I thought I might start with a crazy idea.

When I was teaching some of my colleagues about DVCS one of them asked if
it could be possible to download from different sources at the same time
(since I made the somewhat innacurate analogy of DVCS being to CVCS what
FTP is to BitTorrent).

I've thought about it for a while and I think it is actually a good idea.

Do you think this is remotely possible?, what about something in alignment
with the philosophy/community?, I think partial downloads would be a
requirement for this —which probably is a completely separate
implementation/feature— but I think this would be something interesting to
discuss.
