In the Thunderbird email client, I use threaded view to group patches 
and replies together (a reply will automatically bring the entire thread 
on top), and I use the unread flag if I need to indicate something still 
needs to be read or requires some action. Then it’s just a matter of 
keeping up.

Sometimes I additionally use labels, e.g. To Do for things that need 
action, Later for things that I want to remember, Personal for mails 
that concern my own responses or code that I would like to refer back 
to, and Important for urgent stuff to make it stand out a little better.
