What they do at Mozilla is, each component specifies a fake email 
address as default QA contact in the form component at product.bugs (e.g. 
largefiles at mercurial.bugs), and users can then add those to their watch 
list in email preferences to be notified of any activity in the 
associated components.

Kind of a round-about way but it works.
