Ah! Thanks for that hint. I'll try that.

I do have gettext installed because the TortoiseHg installer builder
requires it (https://bitbucket.org/tortoisehg/thg-winbuild/overview/).

There, gettext doesn't crash.

(as already said, I haven't investigated my gettext crashes yet. Call me
lazy).
