Over the past weeks I considered translating again, but was always
hesitant because I didn't know into which branch to commit. Last time
I committed into the wrong one at the wrong time (some code freeze).

Matt, do you "think that we've decided" the branch, or are there by now
clear rules? Will it always be stable, or only normally stable and some
other branch during a freeze?
Additionally to putting it on the wiki, we could add it also to the
extensive prelude of the .po file.
