Hackable mercurial based on python 2.7

Line 38 fails like this:

$ hg commit -m 'new git subrepo' --debug
s: git config --bool core.bare
abort: The system cannot find the file specified

Since git is in PATH and can be run by hand without issues,
can someone hint me about further debugging this error?
