[PATCH 0 of 6] histedit inclusion

Feel free to fold this series together into a single patch - I didn't
know if it'd be better to have a somewhat pristine checkin followed by
cleanups or a single rollup change.

There's still some non-unified tests (because until yesterday
afternoon this still worked back to 1.3 or 1.4, I ripped out all of
the compact code before moving it over), and the tests that exist
could probably stand to be consolidated, but we can do that later.
