Summary: support splitting files and copying subsets of files
          Severity: feature
    Classification: Unclassified
                OS: All
          Reporter: chris.jerdonek at gmail.com
          Hardware: All
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
           Version: 2.2.1
         Component: Mercurial
           Product: Mercurial

This issue is to add support for splitting a file into multiple files and for
copying a subset of a file to another file. The latter would give the former.

As a software project evolves, it is common to want to split files into
multiple files. Currently, I believe the only way to accomplish this in
Mercurial and have history persist is to copy the file multiple times and
delete the unwanted lines from each. A problem with this approach is that
merging changes from the original file into the multiply-copied files creates
spurious merge conflicts in the deleted portions. Allowing one to link a
copied file back to a subset of the original file would solve this issue.

Maybe there is already a way to achieve this that I don't know about.
