Hello Bryan,

that makes perfect sense.
Being a mentor or not, understanding the nuts and bolts
of Mercurial and contributing to the project will be
a reward on his own.

My guess is that the best way to start would be

1) chapter 4 of your book,
   http://hgbook.red-bean.com/read/behind-the-scenes.html
2) and easy bugs in the bugzilla,
   http://bz.selenic.com/buglist.cgi?quicksearch=keyword%3Aeasy
