Recent Plan 9 changes

All,

A couple of recent changesets aren't quite right for the Plan 9 from
Bell Labs port. I've spoken with Jeff about this offline, but I would
like to see changeset 1d50c69c1f0a reverted while we talk it through
since this changes documented behavior in the factotum extension.

Changeset 4bfd3c7160d9 is harmless, though contains a couple of bugs I
would like to see patched up - I'll submit a follow-on patch since
this also requires some changes to files present in contrib/plan9.
