Setting up lighttpd to server mercurial repos on raspberry pi

How do I setup lighttpd on a raspberry pi to serve mercurial repositories via hgweb.cgi?
I have got this working on a windows PC via some instructions on modifying the hgweb file etc so that IIS can serve it. However trying to set it up on its native environment (ie linux) is proving very tricky. I have followed numerous instructions to setup both lighttpd and apache2 to serve the repos but nothing works, I just get a 404 error every time.....
I am relatively new to linux (although do have some experience) so please bear this in mind.
