I don't think I like this solution. It's nice to be able to see the
line numbers at all times.

These user experience tweaks are probably far too subjective if we
just go by mailing list polls, though. At some point, you'll probably
just have to do what looks good to you unless there's a clear majority
that your choice is bad. There is consensus that highlighting without
line numbers is good; everything else provokes a debate.
