Setting up a virtual machine is easy enough on Windows, with VmWare Player
and Oracle Virtual Box, and maybe MS Virtual PC.  I'm not sure if there is
open source equivalent (on Linux, there's Xen, isn't there?).

i'm pretty comfortable with a Fedora install, but Ubuntu and Mint are more
popular, especially for people just getting their feet wet with Linux.
