If this had already be done, I would have had a much harder time to install a local up-to-date Mercurial on one of our universities clusters. Backwards compatibility might sound like wasted time if you’re on a fast-moving platform, but it’s essential for quite a few users.
So as long as the cost is not too high, I would ask you to keep strong support for older versions of Python.
I would personally be very happy to see a 3.x port of Mercurial, but if that port would make it much harder to use Mercurial on platforms I actually rely on, that would be a bad tradeoff for me.
