I'd just want to forward to you this bug:

It comes from Termux, a terminal emulator app with apt-get, python, and pip
(it's amazing, but that's another topic).

It seems like Android >= 6 will stop supporting hardlinks. Those are sad news,
but making mercurial work in that platform is as simple as following the
workaround stated in that bug.

Of course upstream could do it in a try...catch and give support to Android
with just 4 more LOC.
