I've converted pkgsrc-wip to a git repository and tried converting that
repository to a mercurial repository using 'hg convert'. This worked; however
the resulting checkout has differences in about five directories (of many
hundreds).

When I convert using the hg-git extension, the checkouts are identical.

The git repository is available on request, it's 418 MB.
