So, I know patch(1) will drop information in a git-diff, but I've
never seen a git-diff that actually breaks patch(1)[0]. Do you have such
an example?

0: I have had git-diffs enabled for probably 2 weeks less than I've
been using Mercurial and pipe 'hg diff' to patch all the time. It's
never once been a problem, thus my confusion.
