OTOH, at least Durham's https://phab.mercurial-scm.org/rHG72412afe4c2872fc3197aeee06f6841c76e19772 seems like it would have broken it similarly, and I don't remember hearing any complaints back then, so maybe not a problem in practice. So do as you feel like, I don't care :-)
