[patch 00/10] patches supporting patch queue features

Hello everyone,

Here's an update of most of the supporting patches needed for my patch queue
command.  It isn't complete because I still need to rework the command line
parsing patch as per Matt's suggestion last time.  But, I wanted to send out
my current status in hopes of getting my queue a little smaller.

These are independent patches, so you can cherry pick the ones you like.  I've put
them in rough order of most important (performance/bug fixes) to least important
(features only mq really needs).
