i think i see one of the problems. i have an old distro on the server (RH8
looks like), and sg is very old (link to newgrp), and you can not execute a
command with the sg/newgrp. in fact there is no man page for sg on the
server. ouch.  man sg on my suse box looks fine though, you can use
"-c command" to  execute a command.  so, i might need to upgrade my
server distro.  I am making progress though, and with the permissions
modifications, more later. thanks
